Beloved is a 1998 drama–horror film directed by Jonathan Demme, based on Toni Morrison’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. It stars Oprah Winfrey as Sethe, Danny Glover as Paul D, and Thandiwe Newton (credited as Thandie Newton) as Beloved.
Sethe is a formerly enslaved woman living in post–Civil War Ohio. She is haunted—emotionally and literally—by the trauma of her past, including a devastating act she committed to spare her child from slavery. When a mysterious young woman named Beloved appears at Sethe’s home, Sethe becomes convinced she’s the reincarnation or manifestation of her deceased daughter. The film explores Beloved’s unsettling influence on Sethe, Paul D, and Sethe’s remaining daughter, Denver.
